Cleaner Production Database for Industry

A resource to help small-to-medium businesses become more competitive is being developed by the Environment Protection Agency.

The resource will provide industry with economical and convenient access to case-studies on cleaner production technologies used in a variety of industries. Known as the National Cleaner Production Database, the resource is part of the National Environment Industries Database.

The most comprehensive reference of its type in the country, the EPA's National Cleaner Production Database will assist industry reduce costs, save resources, reduce waste and maintain a competitive edge. According to the Executive Director of the EPA, Barry Carbon, the database will be a valuable resource for both the community and industry.

"Organisations that advise small to medium businesses on the application of clean technologies, such as local councils, university and privately funded research centres and industry associations, will have rapid access to case- studies on the database.

"Those case-studies have been drawn from many industries, including the automotive, livestock, food and hospitality, clerical, textiles, printing, building and construction, medical, chemical, energy production and metal finishing industries.

"Importantly, they illustrate that new, clean technologies have paid for themselves by reducing ongoing running costs," Mr Carbon said.

The database also will provide:

  • Summaries of cleaner production newsletters and articles;
  • A bulletin board listing seminars, workshops and other events; and
  • A message centre through which users can exchange information.

The National Cleaner Production Database can be accessed on the Internet's National Environment Industries Database page or by dialling 008 803 772, toll free for a printed copy.

Mr Carbon said the database is one way the EPA is encouraging a wide range of industries to adopt cleaner production technologies.

"Cleaner production is about reducing potential harm to the environment. It involves improving management practices and rethinking production processes so that wastes and emissions are reduced at source," he said.
